The problem

After a week nobody remembers who paid for what.

One of you pays for the hotel, another for the train tickets, a third for dinner. Then it has to be untangled from a note in somebody’s phone.

The back of a receipt
  • hotel 4200 / 4 = 1050
  • train 1180 … Alex took two
  • dinner 248 CHF … rate?? 9.4
  • Mira paid the taxi, €40
  • Sam ??? check later

From the app

What the app looks like

  1. Eight lines read off a trattoria receipt, each carrying the names of whoever shared it: the bruschetta across two, the carbonara on one, the wine across all four.

    Photograph the receipt

The lines read themselves off it. You point at who had what.

  2. A 150-euro dinner split four ways, with the tip, the conversion into kronor, and a line showing the shares add up to the total.

    See what each person owes

Each share, the tip and the rate on the day. The sum always agrees.

  3. Six expenses from Roma 2026, from gelato to the hotel, each in euros or Swiss francs with the conversion beside it.

The whole trip in one list

Every expense in its own currency, with yours beside it.

  4. Three transfers that make the whole party even, each with a button to record it as paid.

    Settle up

The fewest transfers possible, and who pays whom.

FAQ

Common questions

Does Vemlaut cost anything?

No. The app is free, with no ads and no paywall. If that changes it will say so here before it happens.

Does everyone in the group need the app?

No. A member is just a name someone typed in, and is counted in the split anyway. If someone wants to follow the trip themselves you send an invitation.

Does it work without internet?

Yes. You can log expenses and see your balances with no signal. Changes are marked as unsynced and sent when the network returns. Creating an account and joining a new trip need a connection.

Which currencies can I choose?

All of ISO 4217, searchable by both the currency’s and the country’s name. Rates are fetched daily from the European Central Bank, and each expense is converted at the rate for the day the money was spent.

What happens if two people edit the same expense at once?

Nothing is overwritten. Every expense carries a version, and a change based on an old version is rejected with a message that the figures have moved.

Is there an iPhone app?

Yes, through the web app. Add it to the home screen and it behaves like any other app — same features, same data. A version of its own in the App Store waits until the use justifies Apple's yearly fee.

Why is it called Vemlaut?

«Vem la ut» is Swedish for «who paid?» — the question at every table where the bill lands. The two dots over the u make it an umlaut.

Does it have to be a trip?

No. The app calls it a group, and it can just as well be a household, a flat share or the people you eat with every Thursday. A trip is simply what it is best at.

Does the app read my receipts automatically?

Yes. The image goes to a model that answers with the lines — item, count, price — and you get a draft to correct, and to point at who had what, before anything is saved. It is the one feature that needs a connection.

Where is my data stored?

The API runs in Sweden, the database and receipt images within the EU. The app never sees your password — sign-in is handled by an identity service.
